Senior Compiler Engineer @ Matter Labs

    Import
    SolidityMatter LabsEMEA (Remote)

At Matter Labs, we believe freedom drives progress and prosperity. We don’t see ourselves as a company, but as a team aligned around a single mission: to advance personal freedom for all (see ZK Credo ).

To achieve this goal, we’re building zkSync — a credibly neutral, fully open source technology stack and network on top of Ethereum, which is owned and governed by its community. We use advanced cryptography called zero-knowledge proofs to scale Ethereum infinitely without compromising on security or decentralization. With a world-class team, a community of over 1M supporters across Twitter + Discord , and hundreds of millions $ in funding , we have abundant resources to accomplish the mission.

    The Role

You will be responsible for implementing our LLVM-based compilers from Solidity, Vyper, and other languages to zkSync EraVM bytecode.

We expect you to independently conduct research in your area of ownership, design, implement, and document solutions.

    What We Work On

As the team we help the company to scale Ethereum to promote personal sovereignty . The company has a state of the art zkRollup implemented as a circuit to make computation in blockchain fast and cheap. The team made LLVM-based Solidity and Vyper toolchains for our target to make it accessible to smart contract developers. Now we prioritise improving developer’s experience and making our compilers to optimize better.

Why join the Matter Labs compiler team?

    • Around 80% of your time will be spent on new feature development, not maintenance.
    • You will work in the domain where compilation time consuming, computationally heavy optimizations are possible and profitable.
    • You will work in the domain where good toolchains aren’t common, so your work could make other developer’s lives noticeably better.
    • You will have an opportunity to own a big part of the codebase, be independent in task prioritization, and be measured by results only..
    • You will work remotely with a flexible schedule.
    • You will be heard by leadership and other members of the team.
    • You will be compensated in the top 15% of the market and will be entitled to generous share options

    What You'll Be Doing

    • zkSync EraVM back-end migration to the latest version of the ISA
    • Back-end optimizations - better selection patterns, better ISA utilization, peephole passes, etc.
    • Optimizer tuning - zkSync EraVM is different from a typical LLVM target, so passes like instruction combiner need to be configured, and the pipeline itself has to be tuned
    • Front-end optimizations - our front-ends currently produce correct IR, but it lacks attributes and metadata that would make analyses and transformations more efficient
    • Debug information and debugger support
    • Profiler support
    • Binary format development and linker integration - we currently use a custom linker written in Rust and want to migrate to LLVM one day

What We Look For In You

    • We expect you’ve spent around 5 or more years working on projects that use LLVM or on LLVM itself and learned LLVM in breadth or depth.
    • You ideally have experience implementing MLIR or LLVM IR-level optimizations.
    • We expect you are capable of writing maintainable code in modern C++.
    • To understand the connection between programming language design and compiler implementation, we expect it to be true with respect to the very language you program in.
    • You can deliver results with no supervision.
    • We like critical thinkers and people that communicate when they see something wrong

    Working at Matter Labs

At Matter Labs, you have the freedom to work how you want, when you want, and from where you want. All positions are 100% remote (with optional travel to team and/or industry events). We operate in lean and nimble teams, with no time tracking and minimum bureaucracy. We move fast. Only results matter. We will provide you with everything you need to learn, grow, and be productive.

Our results-only environment means anyone who believes in our mission can join us, regardless of background, sexual orientation, race, gender, and age. Both our team and community are made up of people from diverse backgrounds. That's why, out of politeness and respect, we refrain from opinions on politics, religion, or sex at the workplace.

We designed our culture around the tenants of freedom and ownership. This ethos will underpin our positive-sum community as we evolve toward full decentralization.

If this role resonates with you, apply now for prompt feedback.

Important: We are remote-first, operating in the timezones between UTC-5 (Latam and Atlantic Coast) to UTC+7 (South-East Asia).

Compliant Sharded Blockchain Engineer @ Inria

    Import
    SolidityInriaRennes, Brittany, France (Hybrid)

    Context

The PriCLeSS project establishes a cross-disciplinary partnership to understand the legal challenges and address the technicalobstacles associated with data storage in a blockchain context.

From a technical perspective, the project focuses on designing algorithmic responses to the legal issues that arise when using blockchain technology to handle personal data.

In this context we first proposed Splitchain, a novel fully decentralized state-sharding solution that does not require the maintenance of a synchronization blockchain or any heavy synchronization mechanisms, allowing shards to progress at their own pace in a non-blocking manner. Then, we augmented SplitChain with the ability to enforce geographical or administrative constraints in the placement of data thereby addressing some of the requirements of privacy legislation like the GDPR. We refer to this augmented version as SplitChain2.

    Assignment

This engineering position involves implementing first SplitChain and then SplitChain2. In this task the engineer will be guided by the team who have been working on SplitChain and SplitChain2 consisting of Antoine Rault, Davide Frey and Emmanuelle Anceaume from Inria, and Damien Franchi and Sandrine Turgis from the IODE Team at the University of Rennes. The engineer will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other partners from the PriCLeSS project.

    Main activities

The engineer will follow the following approximate timeline.

-M1-M2: Analysis of the state of the art:

    • Sharding and Proof-of-Eligibility consensus implementations.
    • Research paper on SplitChain
    • Current working Draft on SplitChain2

-M3: High-level design of the implementation.

-M5: Single shard implementation, with features for multiple shards and privacy (indirection, encryption, etc.).

-M8: Hypercube routing for inter-shard communication.

-M12: Prototype implementation of the complete system.

    Technical skills:

    • Proficiency in Rust or willingness to learn the language and use it
    • At least basic terminal usage: bash or other environments
    • Familiarity with git

    Non technical skills:

    • Fluent written and spoken English
    • French can be a plus
    • Ability to work in a team
    • Flexibility
    • Planning and ability to meet deadlines

    Benefits package

    • Possibility of telecommuting and flexible working hours
    • 7 weeks vacation + 10 days RTT
    • Subsidized meals
    • Social, cultural and sports benefits

As part of its diversity policy, all positions at the Institute are open to people with disabilities.

Master's thesis in Software Development: Faster mutation testing with Stryker @ Info Support

    Import
    SolidityInfo SupportVeenendaal, Utrecht, Netherlands (Hybrid)

Mutation testing is a way to measure the effectiveness of unit tests. Stryker Mutator, an open-source mutation testing framework by Info Support is allready fast, but it is up to you to find areas to improve, in order to speed up mutation testing.

    Required Interest(s)

    • Software Architecture
    • Software Development Methodologies
    • Open Source

    What do you get

    • A challenging assignment within a practical environment
    • € 1000 compensation, € 500 + lease car or € 600 + living space
    • Professional guidance
    • Courses aimed at your graduation period
    • Support from our academic Research center at your disposal
    • Two vacation days per month

    What you will do

    • 65% Research
    • 10% Analyze, design, realize
    • 25% Documentation

A mutation testing framework will measure the effectiveness of unit tests by inserting mutants (bugs) inside your production code and running the (unit) tests. If the tests pass for a given mutant, then there might be a missing test case. The mutant ‘survived’ in that case. If at least one of the tests fails, then the mutant is ‘killed’. The percentage of killed mutants is referred to as the ‘mutation score’ and is a metric for test effectiveness.

At Info Support, we maintain Stryker Mutator, an open-source mutation testing framework. It consists of 3 flavors: Stryker.NET (C#), Stryker4s (Scala), and Stryker (for JavaScript and friends). For more info, see https://stryker-mutator.io .

There are many ways of introducing mutants into the source code. Mutating sources statement by statement is a logical choice, but not good for performance as the codebase needs to be recompiled or reloaded after every mutation. Mutation switching can provide a solution to speed up the process. With mutation switching all mutants are compiled into the codebase at once and switched on one-by-one at runtime. In the case of Stryker.NET and Styker4s this has resulted in a significant performance boost.

We would like to increase the performance of Stryker even further. Research will focus on finding areas where improvements can be made and/or developing methodologies for speeding up mutation testing.

Phylax Systems is a tech startup building an open-source security protocol for securing decentralized applications (DApps) on L2 networks by actively censoring hacks on the underlying network.

Our team solves one of the most challenging problems in Web3: Security.

The decision for the Phylax team to work on hack prevention came directly from our own experience with a hack. Having gone through the devastating results of a hack, we knew that we needed to do something about it.

Since the early beginnings of our industry, over $10B have been lost to preventable hacks, while in July 2023, there were over 33 hacks in a single month!

    About The Role

As the first Protocol Engineer in our team, you will spearhead the research and development of the Phylax Network. Your role will be critical in shaping our protocol strategy, designing a secure and efficient mechanism, and guiding its evolution.

    Responsibilities

    • Refine, simulate, and define the parameters of the Phylax Network mechanism that enables hack prevention on any integrated L2.
    • Lead the decision-making on the tech stack that we will use to implement the mechanism (e.g., app-rollup vs app-chain, Cairo vs Solidity, etc.). Choose the appropriate off-the-shelf technologies that are required for the mechanism.
    • Lead the implementation, maintenance, and security (e.g., audit coordination) of the Phylax protocol.
    • Collaborate with other team members to integrate Phylax Network with existing infrastructure.
    • Stay up to date on the latest developments in security and blockchain development (e.g., Foundry, etc.)
    • Create and maintain technical documentation for internal and external use.

    About You

    • Strong knowledge of Solidity (or other smart contract language — convince us against Solidity!)
    • Experience researching and designing complex onchain mechanisms and onchain protocols.
    • Light mathematical background that can support the simulation and definition of the mechanism’s parameters.
    • Experience with protocol engineering and development tools.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to think analytically.
    • You are deeply involved in the crypto space.

    Nice to Have

    • Prior experience in a fast-paced startup.
    • Familiarity with other programming languages (e.g., Rust, Typescript.)
    • Experience in implementing complex smart contracts with high TVL.
    • Experience in leading the Security of a protocol, including the management of audits and other OpSec activities.

    Why join us

    • Be part of the Phylax Founding team.
    • Work on one of the most challenging topics in web3.
    • Be the owner of your project and build it from the ground up.
    • Deeply impactful work for the entire industry.
    • You’ll join a team that appreciates and embraces shitposting.

    What we offer

    • Health Insurance
